The Gallery exhibition features an important group of nearly sixty Coptic textiles from a private Basel collection that has been entrusted to me, as well as related artworks from our own stock. These textiles represent the last flowering of a rich tradition of weaving and embroidery in the ancient world, the vast majority of which do not survive. Thanks to the arid conditions of the Egyptian desert, these Late Antique examples were preserved and with them the fascinating imagery blending pagan past and new Christian motifs.
